Keep handling of the coin itself to the bare minimum. Dust, scratches, fingerprints and moisture will affect the quality of your coins and depreciate their value. Refrain from direct contact with your coins, especially mint condition ones, but necessary handling should always be done by only touching the rim of the coin and never the center.

You should try to avoid cleaning your coins and if it has to be done, the process should be handled by a specialist. Removing a coin's slowly developed patina might make it less tempting to collectors and possibly less valuable.

The most prized Jefferson nickels in your collection should be stored in an excellent holder that safeguards against fingerprints, dust, and even moisture. Stapled or taped packets don’t give maximum protection, but there are other protectors in the market that can also guard effectively against moisture. A dry, temperature controlled area is the best storage area for collectible coins; storing in a basement or other damp location is never a good idea.
