If possible, steer clear of handling your coins. A coins' quality and value decline when scratched, dusty, damaged by moisture or when fingerprints are present. If circumstances require you to touch your collectibles, do so touching only the outsides, especially with very valuable or rare coins in good condition.

It is usually not a good idea to clean coins, so if it has to be done, the process should be entrusted to an expert. Removing the patina that develops on an old coin could also decrease its value, as collectors might prefer coins with this evidence of age.

The most prized half dimes in your collection should be stored in an excellent holder that safeguards against fingerprints, dust, and even moisture. Stapled or taped packets don’t give maximum protection, but there are other protectors in the market that can also guard effectively against moisture. In any case, it is best to store collectible coins in a dry place; never store them in a basement or other cool, damp area.
