It’s best to handle your collectible coins as little as possible. The condition of collectible coins impacts the value: dirty, scratched, moisture-damaged or otherwise imperfect coins can result from too much handling. If you simply have to handle your collectible coins, only touch the outer edges of the coin to minimize contact with your hands.

It is not recommended that you clean your coins, but if you do, you should be sure to entrust the process to a specialist. Rather than cleaning a coin, leaving its patina undisturbed might make it more desirable to collectors and more valuable.

Fingerprints and dust aren't the only culprits in compromising your coin collection; moisture can damage bust dimes over the long run, so make sure the holder you choose protects against it. Although the usual stapled or taped packets don’t provide optimum protection, there are other containers out there that also block moisture. A dry, temperature controlled area is the best storage area for collectible coins; storing in a basement or other damp location is never a good idea.
